Mingus Union High Hot Rod Club Show, 4/19/08 : Mingus Union High School's Hot Rod Club puts on a great custom car show every spring in Cottonwood, Arizona. This year's show was one of the best ever. It was held on April 19, 2008.

These were all shot with a Canon 5D and 16-35L lens, which allowed the wide-angle perspective that most of them show.

Navajo Land, March 22, 2008 : The first set of photographs were taken in an ancient ash field just north of Cameron, Arizona. These mounds are what's left of ancient volcanic eruptions which covered the area with fine ash and cinder and killed large forests. There is petrified wood laying everywhere in these ash fields. The colors and starkness of the scene is what I imaging being on another planet would be like.

The second batch were taken just west of Tuba City, Arizona, in the "hoodoos" which are wind-carved stacks of rock and sandstone. Another unearthly scene, for sure!

These were all taken with a Canon 5D and the 16-35L lens. Enjoy!

Howard Clark Negatives : These photographs were taken by my Grandfather, Howard Clark, while he was a Presbyterian missionary to the Navajos on their reservation at Window Rock, Arizona. The negatives are 3¼ X 5½, and they were copied by sandwiching them between glass plates and illuminated from behind by a diffused ring flash and photographed using a Canon 5D and Canon 100mm macro lens. The resulting images were inverted and the levels adjusted in Photoshop CS3 and Adobe Lightroom.

Most of these shots seem to have been taken around 1913, as you can see in image of the Navajo man seated at a desk in front of the Flagstaff, Arizona Citizen's Bank calendar for January, 1913. That shot, when seen at full resolution (I posted here only 800-pixel images), shows a whole range of cultural and temporal icons - the ink well, oil lamp, binoculars, pen, postage scale, etc. The changes from that photograph's time to the present span only one long-lived person's lifetime!

These shots are all copyrighted 2008 to Betty Von Gausig, my mother and Howard Clark's daughter. Requests for use or duplication of these images must be made in writing to Doug Von Gausig, Critical Eye Photography, by e-Mailing doug@criticaleyephoto.com.

Time-Lapse Videos : These Time Lapse videos were shot using Canon 20D and 5D digital SLR cameras. The camera is set on a tripod and tripped automatically at various intervals. The clouds video, for instance, was shot at 1 frame each minute, and the Las Vegas videos were shot at 1 frame per second. They are then played back at 15 frames per second, which compresses the time of the event, making the video seem to be a "fast motion" depiction. These are low-resolution copies of the original videos, which are of much higher quality, but which would take forever to download! Write to me if you are intersted in the full-resolution videos.
